The tax jobs market in 2009 is experiencing challenges, however, some areas, especially specialist and senior hires are seeing opportunistic hires as firms seek to upskill their tax teams.
Below are broad trends:

• Big 4 market for tax remains very slow, with virtually no external recruitment at Manager or below
• VAT, Transfer Pricing and specialist corporate tax areas such as capital allowances or life assurance are holding up well and there are still openings for exceptional, senior candidates in the UK or EMEA
• Most large firms are set to review their needs in the summer, hence the market should be improving around Q4 2009/Q1 2010
• Mid-Tier firms are cautious, but understand that they can grow by virtue of the Big 4's recruitment policy currently, as they do not need to enter a bidding war for good people
• Law Firms are beginning to think about TP and VAT as areas to build in, but this a long term project
