Barclays Retail Bank is looking for a indirect tax assistant manager or manager to join their busy team. Someone with indirect tax experience but not FS experience will also be considered if the candidate is ambitious and dedicated.

Key responsibilities:

Business Support

  • VAT advice on structuring transactions and mitigating VAT risk within GRB
  • Resolve ad hoc VAT queries as they arise
  • Provide VAT sign off for new products including liaising with other tax colleagues (Corporation tax, TP etc) as appropriate to ensure all tax risk is considered
  • Advice on procurement, including reviewing contracts and ensuring VAT efficiency where possible
  • Assist in developing ideas, providing input to various VAT savings and mitigation initiatives

Planning & Control (30%)

  • Review and consolidate VAT returns and voluntary disclosures
  • Provide input and recommendations into systems development from a VAT perspective
  • Ensure VAT declared/recovered correctly, e.g. catering, client entertainment
  • Manage VAT audits and dealing with tax authority enquiries
  • Manage VAT payments and budgets
  • Ensure practical implementation of any VAT opportunities

Team Building (10%)

  • Face-off to the GRB business areas
  • Provide training for accounts payable staff on basic VAT issues and VAT coding
  • Provide VAT technical training and support for other VAT team members and graduate trainees where required
  • Assist with raising profile of VAT team, e.g. presentations to business areas


Qualifications/Experience

  • University degree (minimum 2:2). Preferred not essential
  • ACA or CTA or other relevant professional (e.g. legal) qualification an advantage
  • Knowledge of global VAT systems and partial exemption

  • Good understanding and experience of VAT and financial services including experience of place of supply, time of supply and partial exemption
  • Keeps up to date with VAT developments (UK and EU), particularly pre budget report and budget, case law (domestic and EU)
  • Good knowledge of the processes and tools for VAT reporting and compliance, disclosure and dispute resolution

  • Initiate and implements projects effectively including coordination of other Barclays staff
