Department overview
Tax is primarily responsible for managing the tax risks arising from Barclays Capital's, Barclays Wealth's and Barclays Corporate's  business activities and ensuring tax controls are in place to ensure compliance with the relevant tax legislation in the countries in which the businesses operate.  Tax also has responsibility for ensuring that the tax rate is managed as effectively as possible.

Main Function
The Business Planning team was created a couple of years ago to focus on Business Planning issues worldwide from a UK tax perspective as well as providing tax coverage/coordination for the EMEA region.  A new member is being sought for this team.

The tax job

Main DutiesWork in the Business Planning team typically undertaking work of the following nature:Dealing with the set up of new entities from a tax perspective, for example; operational structure; funding; local tax rules as they affect the entity and any transactions with Group companies; and CFC implications.

Working with Treasury analysing the tax effect of and researching and putting in place alternatives to ensure tax efficiencies, for example; capital repatriations; shares reductions; injections of capital.
Document tax analysis to support all work done.
Large projects where potential for planning opportunities and/or tax risks which need to be managed.
Looking for planning opportunities.
Managing tax risk where structural issues, for example split hedges where a tax impact; PE risk.  
Role will involve dealing with the Business, other Infrastructure areas, local Tax specialists, external advisers across EMEA and globally depending upon the project being worked upon.

Work closely with Tax Compliance, Front Office Support and Tax Reporting teams to keep them up-to-date re any work the Business Planning Team are undertaking which could affect their respective areas.  

Person Requirements

  • Ability to take responsibility for work and the resolution of the tasks/issues that arise which may not be solely confined to Tax, seeking support from the team and management where appropriate.
  • Self motivated and able to identify potential opportunities.
  • Broad experience of Tax Advisory issues from an in-house or professional services background.  Financial Services experience is a plus.
  • Good communication skills and ability to build and nurture close working relationships in all dealings across the Bank at all levels.
  • Sound UK Tax technical knowledge and sound approach to risk issues and their management.
