Indirect tax jobs - where is industry and the profession in 2010?

Pure Taxation has witnessed a significant increase in the demand for indirect tax professionals for both permanent and interim roles at all levels of seniority during 2009 and into this year. In 2009 there was a doubling of demand (year on year) for VAT professionals, compared to the preceding three years. Given the heightened demand for liquidity during the last two years, any mechanism that has such a direct impact on cashflow, such as a real-time tax, was bound to come to prominence.
Tax Practice
Beginning with the Big 4 accountancy firms, last year was generally quiet, with only replacement and very specific specialist hires incorporating the majority of recruitment taking place. Some indirect tax professionals were affected by the redundancies made during 2009, although generally teams remained strong and were less affected than mainstream corporate tax due to clients’ heightened demand for VAT assistance.
Interims
Another way that corporates have addressed their immediate indirect tax advisory requirements has been through the use of interims. In terms of interim recruitment, VAT has remained a recognised growth area over the last 12-18 months, especially within the financial services industry. We have worked on an increasing number of requirements on a project basis focusing on systems implementation, international VAT planning, VAT compliance and risk management.
